'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' poster puts exploding building above Sept. 11 release date

The upcoming Michael Bay-produced Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is set to open on September 11th in Australia, which was today highlighted by a new promotional poster published to Paramount's Twitter and Facebook streams. The image was quickly retracted, however, after users reacted angrily to the combination of its release date and the artwork above it, depicting the four turtles jumping out of an exploding skyscraper.

Evoking the tragic events of the World Trade Center attacks in New York 13 years ago was certainly not Paramount's intention, as evidenced by the fact that this particular poster had already been used a week earlier, albeit without the offending opening date. And, unlike AT&T last year, Paramount's blunderous tweet made...

A new pair of bills have been introduced to the Senate and House to protect Net Neutrality after a circuit court rulingstruck down the FCC's previous rules earlier this month. @Horse_ebooks is a performance art piece made by humans

2 Comments and 5 Shares

@Horse_ebooks, the Twitter account that was until now largely thought to be a spambot, is controlled by a real person. And in an even more surprising twist, its random bits of text and phrases are meant to be performance art. The New Yorker today has the full story on one of the web's most bizarre mysteries. @Horse_ebooks, along with the popular YouTube channel Pronunciation Book, are the work of Jacob Bakkila and Thomas Bender. The creators, who have for years maintained the projects in total secrecy while employed at Buzzfeed and Howcast respectively, will appear today at Manhattan's Fitzroy Gallery to launch the "next installment" of their collaboration. Bear Stearns Bravo is described by The New Yorker as a "choose-your-own-adventure...

UK officials destroy Guardian hard drives in misguided effort to stop Snowden stories

2 Comments and 4 Shares

Officials from the British intelligence agencyGCHQ raided The Guardian's offices to destroy hard drives related to the newspaper's stories about National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden — despite the fact that the information had already been disseminated to other sites around the world. Ina chilling post today, Guardian editor Alan Rusbridger said the British government has put increasing pressure on editors to surrender all of the information that Snowden provided to the newspaper and its chief reporter on the stories, Glenn Greenwald. Prior to the destruction, an official reportedly told the paper, "You've had your fun. Now we want the stuff back." News of the raid comes a day after Greenwald's Snowden's partner was detained for...
